Reviving Nieoview thanks to CBC cuts and unemployment

It was not quite four years ago that I was hired on full-time at CBC Kelowna, thanks ironically enough, to the public broadcaster’s 2015 plan that called for an expansion of services. Not long after that, the Harper Government (as it likes to be called) became the latest government to cut CBC’s funding.

In a way, it’s a miracle my position lasted as long as it did. The hammer finally fell in the latest round, announced in April, that eliminated 244 positions, including mine. I was laid off on Aug. 31st.

Now I have to figure out what to do next. I’m caught between hoping I can continue on as a journalist and hoping that it’s finally time to find a new career, preferably one that isn’t so thankless and constantly under siege. But you know, banging your head against the wall can just be so satisfying sometimes, so we’ll see where I end up.

In the meantime, I need an outlet for the words that keep popping into my head. So, I’m reviving my blog, which was active during my last stretch of freelance work between early 2010 and late 2011. Keep an eye on this space for my random missives on whatever is holding my interest at a particular moment. Who knows, maybe some of them will end up being interesting and entertaining.
